2007 - 2011 Training |
The
Feldenkrais Method®
A unique system of self-education.
The Feldenkrais Method is a synthesis of its creator's scientific
studies (physics, mathematics, and engineering); his martial arts achievements
(judo, jiu-jitsu), personal in depth studies into psychological systems;
anatomy; cybernetics; bio-mechanics; physiology; and finally his observations
into the developmentally based patterns of human movement and behavior as
personified in the evolutionary history of our species.
The Hawaii program is an intensive eight-month microcosm of the
self-educative and transformative process that Moshe Feldenkrais underwent in
his own life’s experiences. Dr. Feldenkrais used two teaching modalities in his
own training programs and both will be used extensively in the Hawaii Training.
During the training students involve every aspect of themselves: physical,
intellectual, emotional, and imaginative faculties. As a result of the
integration in these four domains, people leave the training feeling and looking
younger, more flexible, moving more gracefully, breathing easier with improved
posture enjoying profound psychological and emotional growth, and in general
feeling and acting in a more potent manner with greater self-expression.

"Movement
is life. Life is a process.
Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself." Moshe Feldenkrais |
Awareness Through Movement®
these are verbally directed movement lessons done at one's own pace. The
movements are explored individually, though the sessions are usually done in a
group. These individual explorations enable individuals to experience the
availability of all human movement and functioning. Lessons that will be
utilized in the training include movements from sports, dance, and the martial
arts; and patterns of neurological functioning and developmental sequences as
manifested in babies, infants and children. Movement patterns will be done in
all sorts of positions from sitting, to lying on the back and stomach, in
standing, and walking. Varieties of lessons will be chosen to give the student
and overall understanding of the Method. The same is true for the second
modality that will be rigorously explored in the training.
Functional
Integration®
This modality is mostly non-verbal, using a gentle, non-invasive hands-on interaction between practitioner and student. This one-on-one exploration offers the same enormous range of growth possibilities as found in Awareness Through Movement. In essence the two are interchangeable, both being based on primarily an individuals kinesthetic experiences. Functional Integration explorations will be taught from the beginning of the program always within the context of Function. Functional Integration will be taught in a very open-ended exploratory way but which will from its inception include finer and finer tuning into the needs of the person to whom the lesson is being given. Students will learn the Method and how it is applicable to all sorts of “clients” from the highly disabled to the highly integrated athletic/dancer type of individual. The focus of the teaching will be towards independent and creative thinking with technique, but not on technique as an end in itself. Just as in Functional Integration itself, the training will work on the integration of the muscular, skeletal, neurological and environmental aspects of the participants.
"Functional
Integration® turns to the oldest elements of our sensory system- touch, the
feelings of pull and pressure: the warmth of the hand, its caressing stroke. The
person becomes absorbed in sensing the diminishing muscular tonus, the deepening
and the regularity of breathing, abdominal ease, and improved circulation in the
expanding skin. The person senses his most primitive, consciously forgotten
patterns and recalls the well being of a growing young child."

Career Opportunities
The training is designed for people from all walks of life but will be of particular interest to people who are already working in careers where learning or movement is involved, such as:
- educators
- physical and occupational therapists
- massage therapists
- yoga teachers
- artists
- actors
- musicians
- singers
- psychologists and physicians.
The training will also be open to a few individuals who wish to take it purely for personal enhancement, or the alleviation of some disability such as an orthopedic or neurological injury.
